By V Ramasamy Though I have been in Delhi for the past twenty years, I never dared to enter a puja pandal (temporary shelter, used for worship), as I was under the impression that it must be a Bengali affair (an ethnic group belong to western part of India). Unfortunately I did not have any Bengali friends at that time to make me realize that how my perception was wrong. The opportunity to visit a Puja Pandal came on my way only after my shifting to my new residence called Kendriya Vihar. During the month of October, few Bengali friends of Kendriya Vihar came to my residence and informed that they are going to organize their first Durga puja festival at our colony and invited me to attend the puja. Since I was always keen to visit a puja pandal but never did so due to my perception, considered the invitation as an opportunity to fulfill my desire to visit a Puja Pandal. On the first day of Durga puja, I entered the puja pandal with full of anxiety and thrill. The moment I entered the pandal, I was completely taken aback on seeing the huge Durga idol. I was totally mesmerized by its beauty. It was a breathtaking experience. Lot of devotees gathered there and started offering their prayers to the idol. Few devotees were dancing in front of the idol with rhythmic sound of the drumbeat. I was completely spellbound on seeing the devotees dancing in front of the idol by holding the mud bowls filled with burning firewood in both their hands and also in their mouth. The way they were twisting their hands without dropping the bowls were amazing. In the cultural programmes, artists from various parts of India showed their talent in front of the large audience. Little children of Kendriya Vihar were performing various music and dance programme, which enthralled the audience. Community lunch served was so delicious and it was an opportunity for the people who came from other parts of India to taste the rich Bengali cuisine. The whole colony wore a festive look during the festival. All residents were participated in the puja with great enthusiasm. After witnessing the events of the puja pandal at Kendriya Vihar, I realized that how my opinion about Durga Puja was wrong. Durga Puja Committee members ability to accommodate all kind of people and involve them in the celebrations is really a quality that should inspire one and all. Though Durga puja originated from Bengal, it has metamorphosed itself as Puja for all the people irrespective of caste, creed and religion. You’ve got a checklist to remind you to stop the newspaper delivery, hold your mail, drop the dog off at the kennels, and something else. Something that you’re forgetting. Oh yeah, the pond. What are you going to do about the pond? If you’re going away for a long weekend then your pond won’t even miss you. Check your water levels and make all of other normal tests, feed your fish, and hit the road. However, if you’re going away for a longer period, say a week or two, then you’ll need to take some extra measures to ensure that your pond stays safe and happy and that it doesn’t miss you while you’re gone. Here’s a few more items to add to your vacation checklist: 1. Filter About a week before you pack the kids into the SUV clean all of the mechanical parts of your filter and pumps. This includes brushes and settlement chambers and all of the pre-filter parts. You want to do this a week in advance so you can keep an eye on the resulting water quality, after the cleaning, to make sure that everything is in balance. 2. Change your water Dump about 20-30% of the existing pond water and replace it with clean and chlorine-free water. This helps to dilute any build up of nitrates or ammonia. Fill the pond to the top to compensate for evaporation while you are gone. This is a good time to check your oxygen levels as well as perform all of your other water balancing tests. 3. Place a moratorium on new fish This is not the time to add new fish to your pond. You won’t be there to monitor their progress and there’s no telling what kind of problems you will face when you return. 4. Predator Protection Figure that your heron, raccoon, and other neighborhood predators are going to rush to your pond the moment that your taillights disappear and plan accordingly. If you do not already have natural hiding spots in your pond then cover it with a secure pond net that is made especially for this purpose. 5. Feeding If you’ll be gone for two weeks or less, feed your fish their normal amount just prior to leaving and don’t worry about it again until you get back. Your average koi can get along just fine without being fed for two weeks or less. They’ll find plenty of algae and the occasional wayward bug to snack on and their metabolism will adjust quickly to a reduced diet for a short period of time. If you plan to be gone for a longer time then your only alternatives are either having someone come and feed for you, or getting an automatic fish feeder. Fish feeders can be expensive, they can break down and stop feeding, and they are also subject to malfunctioning and overfeeding. Your best bet is a friend or neighbor. If you are going to depend on human help make sure that you leave very explicit feeding instructions and tell them not to deviate even a tiny bit. Make sure that they know that overfeeding fish is not a “treat” and that they could end up killing the fish while trying to do a good deed. Also let them know that if they miss a feeding day not to feed twice as much the next time to make up for it. Now here are some tips for when you return: 1. Check to make sure that all of your fish are present and accounted for and that they all appear healthy. 2. Perform all of the usual water tests and adjust anything that is out of balance. 3. Clean your filter and pumps just like you did before you left for vacation. 4. Resume your normal feeding schedule. Owning a pond doesn’t mean that you have to give up your well-deserved vacation. By Jacob Farin A pitcher plant is a type of carnivorous plant that has tube-shaped leaves, hence the name pitcher plant. Along the rim of each pitcher are glands that secrete nectar. Insects are attracted to this nectar, so they buzz around, licking up all of the nectar they can. Some pitchers even produce an insect narcotic to sweeten the deal for them. Just beneath the rim, on the inside of the pitcher, are glands that produce even more intoxicating nectar. This drives insects crazy, so they reach in, stretching as much as they can to reach the mother lode of nectar, and then they fall in! With some pitcher plants, the tops of their pitchers are lined with hairs that point downward, preventing insects from crawling back out. Other pitcher plants simply have very smooth walls, which are too slippery on which for insects to crawl. Depending on the pitcher plant, there may be fluid produced by the plant that slowly digests the insects. Other pitcher plants simply wait until the insect dies from heat exhaustion or starvation. As the insect decays, the plant absorbs the nutritious morsel, hence the name carnivorous plant. Now, one of the reasons why I grow pitcher plants, specifically the North American varieties, is because I am lazy. Sure the insect-eating part sounds cool, but if these plants needed constant care and maintenance, I wouldnt even attempt to grow them. Like my dog Hank, if you gave me a choice of taking a nap in the hot afternoon summer sun or having to provide constant attention to a collection of seemingly delicate plants, you bet I am going to take a nap and let those plants fend for themselves. That is why North American pitcher plants, collectively known as Sarracenia, are the perfect plants for someone like myself. With these plants, all you need to do is set them outside in full sun, over water them and toss the fertilizer in the trashcan. Far too many folks mistake Sarracenias as delicate prima donnas who need constant attention. These plants are actually quite adaptable to extreme conditions and grow very well in a variety of climates. In fact, you can find many of these plants growing in the wild from Eastern Texas through Georgia and all the way up into Canada! Sarracenias are sun-loving bog plants and enjoy the summer heat. Like kids on a hot summer day, they revel in sitting in water and catching bugs. So set them in a big tray of water and let them catch bugs on their own. Remember, bugs are like little packets of fertilizer. So in a way, these plants fertilize themselves. Now, how maintenance-free is that? So no matter where you live in the world, you can grow just about any variety of Sarracenia outdoors. The varieties that are native to the southern regions of the United States are especially tough and adapt well to lower humidity and hot summer weather. There are long-time pitcher plant enthusiasts in Los Angeles, Salt Lake City, Denver, Phoenix, Houston, Atlanta and Tampa who have successfully grown Sarracenia pitcher plants outdoors with very minimal care. Full sun and a tray of water are all they gave their plants. Sure there are a few modifications to their care when the temperature approaches 110F (43C) or if you have very hard water, but it is nothing like having to mist your plants every hour on the hour or douse your plant with imported bottled water. In most instances, daily top watering is all that is necessary. You can do that when you get home from work, right? Sarracenia pitcher plants really need nothing more than full sun and a tray of water to maintain their stunning and captivating appearance. With my collection of pitcher plants, I grow them strictly outdoors in 8-10 hours of direct sunlight. They all spend their days sitting in pools of water and catching bugs on their own. Because they are native to the United States and Canada, pitcher plants will go dormant in winter and will tolerate freezing temperatures. As container plants, they are hardy to 20F (-7C). When the weather warms up again in spring, they come right back to life. So if you have been hesitant in getting carnivorous plants because of the amount of care you thought they needed, start with Sarracenia pitcher plants. They are easy to grow and nearly maintenance-free. But most of all, they are the perfect plants for people like myself who enjoy afternoon naps on hot summer days.
